The two cultures is the first part of an influential 1959 rede lecture by british scientist and novelist c p snow 1 2 its thesis was that the intellectual life of the whole of western society was split into two cultures the sciences and the humanities which was a major hindrance to solving the worlds problems. C p snow was a british scientist and novelist his life straddled the two cultures the scientific and the classical one and thus he was in an ideal position to expound on the subject which he did in 1959 in the rede lecture series. The two cultures have so few points of contact that the diffusion of novels shows the same sort of delay and exhibits the same oddities as though they were getting into translation in a foreign country. The notion that our society its education system and its intellectual life is characterised by a split between two cultures the arts or humanities on one hand and the sciences on the other has a long history.
